Planning And Implementing Elementary Physical Education Programme


   Planning and implementing Physical Programme is the systematic distribution of the Physical Education activities that are required to meet the needs and interests of the children within the period they should stay in school.

   Guidelines For Planning An Effective Elementary Physical education Programme.

    Basically six guidelines should be borne in mind when planning an elementary physical Education programme.
  1. The activities to be included in the programme should reflect the stated objectivities of Physical Education.
  2. Select your activities from the activities areas- movement concept, locomotor and non-locomotor skills, rhythmic activities, low organized games and skills,gymnastic skills and physical fitness activities
  3. Determine the age and maturation of the children. this will be good guide in placing the various activities to the appropriate level of the children. It will also be a good guide in determining which activities will be given more attention at each age level.
  4. Determine the time alloted for physical Education in the year, term or week.
  5. Determine the available facilities and equipment and finding an appropriate alternative where necessary.
  6. Evaluate the programme to see that activities are planned in terms of meeting the stated objectives. 
   A good elementary Physical Education programme should reflect the objectives of neuromuscular skill outcomes,like increasing locomotor,manipulative and stability abilities. Fitness outcome e.g enhanced level of strength, muscular endurance and circulo-respiratory endurance. Perceptual-Motor outcome e.g greater body awareness, spatial awareness, directional and temporal awareness. Socio-Emotional Outcome that is increased peer-group acceptance and recognition, increased ability to get along well with other, increased ability in self-expression and creativity, enhanced self-concept and increased ability to release tension through acceptable mode of behavior.     Academic Understanding that is enhanced understanding, interest or performance in science, mathematics, social studies and language arts. Leisure Time Outcome that is increased ability to play well, beginning skills gained in lifetime sports, ability to find joy in easy locomotion and ability to entertain one'sself constructively.    Implementing the Physical Education Programme include three approaches in teaching physical Education which  are:
  • The traditional  method 
  • Exploratory method and;
  • Combination method.
