OBASANJO, IBB MADE GOVERNORS ATTRACTED TO CORRUPTION – BRAITHWAITE

image

Elder statesman, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite while reacting to a statement credited to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in which the former president slammed state governors for living like emperors – to the detriment of the masses said, Obasanjo and a former military president Ibrahim Babangida,
should hold themselves responsible because they made corruption attractive to state governors in the country. According to Braithwaite, the policies and actions of the former leaders elevated corruption in governance, adding that many state governors were merely emulating them. PUNKVIBES in this piece brings you the 3 premises upon which Mr. Braithwaite based his points…
– Braithwaite said that the military constitution is what has made the governors emperors and he had warned Obasanjo of this, when he (Obasanjo) came into power in 1999.
– He added that the governors could afford to act as emperors because they were left to determine security votes which they do not account for only because the 1999 military constitution clothes them (governors and president) with immunity against being arrested for criminal misdeeds, for reason which many of them brazenly looted the treasury and got away with it.
– He also said Obasanjo’s statements were frivolous because he (Obasanjo) and Babangida made corruption attractive to governors and they elevated corruption in governance which subsequent presidents and governors are emulating. Obasanjo became rich through this structure, he added.
Do you agree???
